Maria Poptsova visited the Chukotka Branch of the Northeastern Federal University named after M.K. Ammosov in the city of Anadyr.

At the invitation of Chukotka Branch in Anadyr, Maria Poptsova, the Head of the International Laboratory of Bioinformatics at the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Sciences, Faculty of Computer Science of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Moscow, visited the city of Anadyr.

Maria Sergeevna gave an interview on the Purga radio station, in which she discussed what the laboratory does, who bioinformatics specialists are, and the problems they solve. "What do bioinformatics specialists do and what problems do they solve? Why do people take genetic tests? What role does Data Science play in bioinformatics?"

Maria Sergeevna gave an interview on the Purga radio station where she talked about the laboratory's activities, bioinformatics specialists, and their tasks: "First of all, allow me to thank the management of Chukotka Branch for the unique opportunity to visit the most remote region of the country, to feel the vast expanses of the edge of the earth, and to see the splendor of the northern nature with my own eyes! I was very impressed by the level of students who presented their bachelor's theses for defense. Each work represented a completed computer project, already being applied in companies and organizations of the Chukotka region.

Now, a bit about the projects of my laboratory.

Bioinformatics is the computer and mathematical analysis of molecular biology and genetic data. 21st-century biotechnology generates big data, the analysis of which is currently possible only with artificial intelligence methods. There is also the opportunity for genetic testing of people to identify mutations associated with diseases. This allows doctors to make a more accurate diagnosis and assign personalized treatment. Genetic testing is especially relevant in the field of personalized medicine for different populations and peoples.

The bioinformatics laboratory is actively involved in research in the field of cardiogenetics. Additionally, we are developing prognostic AI systems, both with and without genetic data. For example, we are developing a predictive system for assessing the risk of adverse events in patients with myocardial infarction after discharge from the hospital based on digitized data of patients from the Surgut Cardiocenter, which has been recorded since 2009. Such projects can be scaled to the regions.

As for potential joint projects with the Chukotka Branch, it would be very interesting to analyze the data of patients from the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, especially the indigenous peoples of the North. It's vital to identify factors contributing to rapid adaptation of the organism to life conditions in the Extreme North. It would also be promising to perform genetic analysis on the indigenous peoples of the North and identify genetic features and population-specific disease associations.

The medicine of the future is personalized medicine, and the sooner we start working on creating catalogs of genetic diversity and collecting patient data from different peoples of the North, the quicker we will make a leap into personalized medicine.

I hope that in the near future we'll implement some joint project, and I will come here again, to Chukotka!”

On 11 of June 2024, the Chukotka Branch successfully held the defense of the final qualification works of the distance learning students of the group Z-BA-IVT-19, who finished their training in the direction 09.03.01 "Informatics and Computer Engineering," specializing in "Software Development Technologies."

The chairperson of the state examination commission for the defense of the final qualification works was Maria Poptsova, Head of the bioinformatics laboratory of the Higher School of Economics, Moscow.

Graduates presented their thesis projects to the strict and competent commission, which are directly related to their professional activities.

Vladislav Mashkov discussed the adaptation of the 1C Enterprise program for the needs of his security company "Rubezh". Beletskaya Antonina developed a website for the company LLC "IDRSP". Demin Alexander virtualized the management processes of the information system "ROSMORPORT". Egor Ninenko demonstrated the expanded structure of the website of the Rospotrebnadzor Office for the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and its integration with the Public Services portal.

The defense included the participation of Nikolai Kulik, the authorized representative for the protection of entrepreneurs' rights for the Government of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug; representatives of the Department of Digital Development of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug Dmitry Korzh and Arthur Arestov. Joining remotely were the head of the base department of modern banking at the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) Alexander Slezko from Vladivostok, the head of the telecom and multimedia direction at Gazprom Neft Information Technology Service LLC Vladislav Doroshenko from Saint Petersburg, as well as project supervisors – Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Chukotka Branch Anton Lvov, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Head of the Department of Operation and Service of Information Systems at the North-Eastern Federal University (NEFU) Galina Protodyakonova.

All graduates successfully defended their bachelor's projects presented.
